Fed Shakeup, Mortgage Fraud Allegations, and Student Loan Surprises

August 28, 2025

On the August 26th episode of The Jon Sanchez Show, Jon was joined by Dwight Millard of Highlands Mortgage and Cory Edge of Edge Realty to unpack a storm of breaking news and emerging financial issues.

This episode covered:

  • The allegations of mortgage fraud against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook
  • The mounting political pressure on the independence of the Federal Reserve
  • And the surprising damage to credit scores caused by resumed student loan payments

Let’s break down the discussion.

Mortgage Fraud Allegations: The Lisa Cook Controversy
Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, a Biden appointee, became a central figure of controversy after President Trump announced her removal, citing alleged mortgage fraud.

What’s the claim?
According to the show, Cook is alleged to have signed two mortgage applications in 2022—just weeks apart—each declaring the property as her primary residence. Jon and Dwight emphasized that borrowers cannot legally claim more than one home as their primary residence within such a short window.

“You can’t have two primary residences,” Jon said plainly.
“If I did that, I’d be in jail,” Dwight added.

Dwight explained that this could violate the occupancy affidavit borrowers sign at closing, affirming they intend to live in the home as their primary residence within 60 days.

Cory Edge pushed back, noting that these are only allegations, and no public documentation had been presented.

“Maybe she got transferred. Maybe something happened. Nobody knows yet.”
“It’s ridiculous to assume guilt before facts come out.”

The Larger Implication: A Politicized Federal Reserve?
While the mortgage issue raised eyebrows, the bigger concern may be the precedent it sets for political influence over the Fed.

Jon explained that Cook is the second Fed governor recently removed or pressured to step down, and that Trump appears to be consolidating influence by appointing replacements more aligned with his economic agenda. He quoted the former president, who stated:

“Once we have a majority [on the Fed], housing is going to swing… We’ve got to get interest rates down.”

Jon and Cory agreed this trend is troubling.

“The Fed has to remain independent,” Jon asserted.
“If we politicize the Fed, history shows us it never ends well.”

Cory raised the legal complexity: if Cook remains on the job while under investigation, any votes or decisions she participates in could later be invalidated—and that, in turn, could expose Fed Chair Jerome Powell to removal for not acting sooner.

Student Loan Confusion is Hurting Credit Scores
In the final segment, Dwight Millard turned the spotlight to student loan repayments and how they’re unexpectedly damaging consumer credit.

After a long forbearance period during the pandemic, repayment requirements quietly resumed earlier this year. Many borrowers didn’t realize their loans were now active—and as a result, are seeing steep drops in their credit scores.

“I’m seeing cases where someone’s score drops significantly,” Dwight shared.
“And they had no idea they were delinquent.”

Jon emphasized how severe this could be—not just for borrowers looking to buy a home, but for those whose employers monitor credit scores as a condition of employment.

“You’re dealing with the federal government,” Jon said. “They don’t send collection agencies. They garnish wages, place liens. They will collect one way or another.”

Dwight encouraged all borrowers with outstanding student loans to review their status immediately, especially if they haven’t made a payment since early this year.

Key Takeaways

  • Mortgage fraud accusations against a Fed official are serious—but unproven.
    • The situation raises questions about how mortgage rules are enforced, and whether political motivations are at play.
  • Efforts to reshape the Federal Reserve could threaten its independence.
    • The Fed’s apolitical role is foundational to U.S. economic stability. Sudden changes in its leadership could lead to market uncertainty.
  • Student loan confusion is hitting credit scores hard.
    • If you thought your loan was still paused or forgiven—check again. Missed payments could already be affecting your credit.
